Technology QotW: You Can Run, but You Can't Hide...
As soon as the press learned the name of the prostitute associated with Eliot Spitzer, pictures from her MySpace and Facebook accounts were splashed across the web. Do you ever worry about how much personal information there is about you on the internet?
I tend not to worry about that, but I'm also feeling a little misled on the whole thing. The girl from the Spitzer scandal (and incidentally, I agree with Violet Blue: "It's only a sex scandal if you're scandalized by sex") was presumably in control of her MySpace Page, and also presumably knew that the service she worked for had a website. I keep track of the information about me on the Internet. I Google myself every so often, and believe me, I'm fully aware that old pages, and things that aren't necessarily even posted anymore, could easily be cached in inaccessible places, and return to bite me later.
What I've found more interesting in the last couple of years is the lessening of the division between what's personal and what's professional. I've known a great many people who don't understand that separation any more, and I've swung back and forth on whether or not that's a good thing. At the moment, I'm at "so what?" Does it matter any more? Your coworker is strange, and you knew that. Now you know exactly how, but unless it's something illegal, does it matter?
