Another Vista Breakdown....

Frustration

Okay, I've gotten a number of minor issues taken care of concerning the wonderful world of Vista learning. But would someone please help me with something that should be relatively simple?? Pretty please?

I have a 22 inch flat screen monitor. The optimum resolution, according to Dell, is 1680 x 1050. Yeah, right! Oh, it's beautiful! The text is so clear and the quality is great, but........it's made for teeny tiny people with teeny tiny eyes!! I would be blind in two weeks tops....not something I'm particularly looking forward to since I rather enjoy having sight.

I've checked around a lot of places, and it appears that people using Vista have two main resolutions: 1024 x 768 and 1280 x 1024. The latter one makes for small print, and also leaves about 2.5 inches of blank space on each side of the web page. What's the point of having a nice big monitor if it doesn't use it well? Lol. And the former leaves everything at a nice size (no eye strain), with about 1 inch remaining on each side of the web page. But the photos and the text are not SHARP and clear.

I have tried every resolution for a 22 inch monitor with 32-bit color, and the 1024 x 768 seems to be the best. But why isn't it sharp and clear? Boo hoo. The photos are a little on the grainy side, and the text is a little on the pale, fuzzy side.

What resolution do you use? And what other settings do you use for the colors, etc? I've been trying, but I just can't get my mind wrapped around it.

Swimming With Horses

This would make me very happy. I've ridden horses many times, but I've never been in the water with them....let alone having the horse swimming beneath me. I would have to say that this definately qualifies as a happy photo for the VOX Hunt.

"Show me how to live" / Boiled Beans: Just Books

It's the weekend and I don't feel social. Friends have gone out for a Hindi movie, Kismat Connection. I don't really watch mainstream "Bollywood" (urgh, I hate that word. Did you know we have "sandalwood," "tollywood," and "mollywood" too?) movies a lot anyway. I like the independents and the big budget ones that stray from the "Bollywood" formula. (Speaking of which...I've been in lust with Farhan Akhtar for a very long time now...) So it was easy to say no. So I'm here typing. Think I'm going into hermit mode again. Therefore the Chris Cornell/Audioslave flashback.

Tried weaseling my way out of a formal lunch tomorrow, but they threatened me with bodily harm if I didn't show up. People know me way to well for my own good.

I joined this awesome new library run by a husband and wife duo. Plugging them here 'cause I love what they're doing. The website isn't fully functional as yet since they've just started. Just Books. (Bangalore people who read this, go join now! Even if you don't read books!) Found the whole Wilbur Smith collection there and brought the first three books of the Courtney saga home with me: Birds of Prey, Monsoon and Blue Horizon. Was looking for The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub and saw Sophie Kinsella's collection next to that. Never really read chicklit before, so picked up Shopaholic Sister. Think I'll end up returning it before I start reading it, but will give it a fighting chance.

Wilbur Smith just might be my favourite author by virtue of my having read most of his books at least twice. (This does not discount Tolkein.) By that logic, Van Helsing is my favourite movie. Guess I've watched it 9 or 10 times. I don't know why. Think it's the gypsy music.

QotD: Time Travel

What's the closest thing you have to a time machine?

My blogs/diaries are like a time machine to me. Especially the ones I wrote in high school, because they were just so detailed. (If you these these blog entries are detailed, you should see what I used to write in high school.) I can read a blog or diary entry and be taken back to what I was feeling at that time, be reminded of events that I'd previously forgotten, reminisce about good times or smile sadly at the bad ones.

I really wish time travel existed, by the way. I'd like to go back in time to parts of my life that I don't remember, see what it was really like (like 1985? I don't remember 1985). And then I'd like to travel at random points in history-a colonist at the cusp of the American Revolution, a flapper in the 20's, a bystander at the Vesuvius eruption. Books can take you there but it's not enough.
